Consubstantial Planning

A special offering of Hunter Street Investment Advisors

Consubstantial - from Latin roots meaning "with" (com-) and "substance" (substantia)—literally "of the same substance".  Or put another way, being of the same identical essence or fundamental nature.

When you make important decisions, do you incorporate your values?  Your morals?  Your faith?  Are your financial decisions important decisions?  Then, shouldn’t the principles you live by lead you to ethical, faith based, financial decisions? Your financial actions should be consubstantial with your beliefs.

In the post-COVID era, increasing numbers of our clients have expressed an interest in finding a way to make sure their invested money is not doing things that don’t align with their beliefs.  This lead us, at Hunter Street, to research opportunities for clients wanting ethical investing.  As a result, we are proud to offer Consubstantial Planning, a portion of our planning and investment management services that focuses on what companies are doing, not just what they are returning.

In the ethical investing universe, it should come as no surprise that the leading investment types in this space are those based on religious, predominantly Christian beliefs, often referred to as Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI).  Some of the leaders in the BRI space would be:

  • Guidestone Funds
  • Timothy’s Plan
  • Inspire Investments
  • Thrivent Funds
  • Eventide
  • Praxis Funds
For those looking for an even more deliberate focus than just BRI, the Catholic Church provides further guidance for what it believes is ethical investing.  The following use the 2021 USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) Guidelines to screen out “bad actors”

  • Knights of Columbus (KofC) Mutual
  • Global X S&P 500 Catholic Values ETF (CATH), and
  • Ave Maria Mutual Funds

Hunter Street has access to Arimathea Model Portfolios that are using USCCB guidelines but also guided by the Vatican’s Mensuram Bonam (2022) which provides 3 calls… the Call to Engage, the Call to Enhance, and the Call to Exclude.  These portfolios range from purely exclusionary to those of advocacy, where companies are engaged directly.   Efforts are made to improve a company’s position with respect to:

  • The life and dignity of the human person,
  • The treatment of the family and the community at large,
  • The dignity of work and the rights of workers, and
  • Care for God’s creation and stewardship of the planet.

These advocacy portfolios don’t just avoid evil – they actively defund it!

Arimathea not only strives to empower individual Catholics to invest without compromise of conscience; but it also works at the diocesan level and has even been invited, by Pope Francis and again by Pope Leo the XIV to be a part of the Vatican’s team of financial experts.  Hunter Street is proud to partner with and offer Arimathea Investments and has advisors that have completed the Accredited Arimathea Advisor (AAA) program.

If you are looking to align your money with your beliefs or faith, or even actively trying to defund evil, Hunter Street’s Consubstantial Planning was designed with you in mind.  Please reach out to us to hear more about ethical financial planning offered through our Consubstantial Planning service.
